Sign-in code never gets accepted
Codes expire after a few minutes. Press Select on the code box to get a new one, then enter it at plex.tv/link on a device where you are already signed in to Plex.
My server shows as offline
The app asks plex.tv for your servers and then tries each address in order: local network first, then your public address, then Plex Relay. Check that the server is running and that Remote Access is enabled in Plex settings if you are away from home.
Playback says “Transcoding”
The server is converting the file because the Apple TV cannot play it as-is. Common causes are TrueHD or DTS audio and image subtitles. Pick a different audio track or turn subtitles off on the show's page, or pause the player and change them there. Lower the quality in Settings if the server is struggling.
I want to test the beta
Email marquee@christophior.com with what your server runs on and what you mostly watch. Testers are added in small groups.
Something else
Email marquee@christophior.com or open an issue at github.com/christophior/atv-plex-player/issues. Include the tvOS version and what the Direct Play badge said.
Questions
Do I need Plex Pass?
No. Marquee uses the same server access any Plex client does. Hardware transcoding and Plex's own trailers need Pass on the server, but nothing in the app does.
Will my MKV files play?
Yes. The Apple TV can't open MKV directly, so your server repackages the stream on the fly without re-encoding when the codecs allow. The badge says Direct Stream when that happens and Transcode when it has to convert.
Does 4K and HDR work?
Yes, when the Apple TV can play the file and your server hands it over as is. The show's page says what the file has: 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10, Atmos, DTS-HD. The player badge says what the server did with it. Pick Original in Streaming Quality to ask for direct play every time, or a lower preset on a slow connection.
Does it work away from home?
Yes, if Remote Access is on in your server's settings. Marquee tries your local address first, then your public one, then Plex Relay.
What about subtitles?
Pick a track on the show's page or pause the player and change it there. Switching restarts the stream where you are, not from the top. Settings has defaults: off, foreign parts only, or on, your language, SDH, and fetching missing ones from your server's provider.
Can my family use it?
Yes. Plex Home profiles show up as Who's watching when the app opens, with a PIN where you set one. Each person gets their own Continue Watching and watched state. The Lifetime purchase is shared with your Family Sharing group.
What does it show on the Apple TV home screen?
Continue Watching and the latest additions in the top shelf, before the app is open. Title and artwork also show in Control Center and the swipe-down panel while something plays.
Why does it cost money?
Because there are no ads and no store. Browsing is always free. After the free week, playback needs a purchase: $19.99 once at launch, or a subscription with its own 7 free days. That is what pays for the next version.
Can I try it without a server?
Yes. Add the demo server from Settings and you get a library of invented titles with the Blender open movies as the video, so you can see the whole app before pointing it at your own.
Is it affiliated with Plex?
No. Marquee is an independent app. Plex is a trademark of Plex, Inc., and the app talks only to plex.tv and your own server.
